Finding a website hosting provider is much like finding an auto insurance company. Most people usually rely on word of mouth – they go with the company that their family or their friends use. And then, once they are locked into one company, they usually stay there for quite some time. But, you don’t have to do business like that and you should actually put a little more thought into what company you end up working with.
Remember that your website hosting provider is your link to the outside world. If they are down, then you are down. If they don’t answer your questions in a timely manner, then you are out of business. You have to have a company that is reliable, affordable, and will stay in business for a long time.
But, you also need functionality. The hosting company that your best friend uses may not be the best one for you. Maybe you want to do some high level programming behind the scenes, or you are in the process of buying a lot of mirror domain names – your friend’s website provider may not be able to manage that.
Perhaps the best thing you could do before you sign on with any one company is to build a list of the specifics that you need – how much email traffic, how much web traffic, how much web space, what kind of programming accessibility, what kind of statistics packages – and then shop those requirements around. You will find that some companies offer you much more than you need, and some companies offer you more. The key is to find one that offers you what you need at a good price and still allows you room to grow later on.
No one said that finding a website hosting provider would be easy, but it is a lot easier if you do the legwork before you make a wrong decision.
