That said, there is a tremendous difference in the additional features that you can purchase, as well a the customer support that you will get from each company.
Before you register a domain, you should investigate each company thoroughly, as well as its parent company and their affiliates. If you notice that even one company in the chain has a bad reputation, you should steer clear of all of them. Inevitably, when you do business with a registrar that has less than stellar associates, you will find that you domain will be hijacked or auctioned off if you do not pay several hundred dollars to the parent company.

Oddly enough, if a company tells you that they will only charge a dollar or so for this service, they may not be protecting your information. In fact, if you do a WHOIS search, you are likely to find that you spent that money for nothing. While other companies will charge a larger fee for this service, at least they will give you the privacy that you ask for.

In most cases, if you do just a bit of research, you will find other sellers that are far more reputable. I personally use GoDaddy for all my domain registrations and although its website is a bit cluttered and it will try and sell you all sorts of add-ons, I’ve never had cause to complain about its service. GoDaddy charges about $10 a year for private registration but, in my view, that’s well worth it.
