When you are choosing a web host, there are two things to consider really – do they work well for what you are doing, and will you be able to resell their services. Not all web hosts will also be web hosting resellers, and if you are looking at making a living out of working online, then you need to be able to resell what they have.
When you are looking at getting into the web hosting resellers realm, then there are a few things you need to be aware of. First of all, there was a time when, just because you were a reseller, you received free hosting. This is rarely the case anymore. Because so many so-called resellers never made a sale, they rode free for a long time on their host’s service. So, if you are going to be a reseller, then you really have to get out there and make your sales. Just putting up a link on your website will not be enough.

For those of us who have been on the internet for the better part of a decade, we remember back when there were few affordable web site hosting services at all. We had to pay several hundred dollars every few months, just for a little web space. We didn’t get programming tools, utilities, statistics packages, or even any web templates from which to choose. We were given an address to FTP our sites up to and that was all.
Boy, have things changed! Now, anyone can get affordable web site hosting services that come with some of the most amazing tools imaginable. The biggest change over the past few years has been the ability to host multiple domains and entire websites on the same account. By being able to duplicate your site, over and over, on the same account, you save yourself a lot of money and even more time.

If you are new to affiliate marketing, or are just interested in putting up your first website, then you are probably looking for some form of affordable web page hosting. It can be found, but it takes a little research and you really do need to know what you are looking for. Don’t go with the first one that comes your way or you will regret it for a mighty long time!
There are a few things that you have to look out for, and the most important one is the reputation of the company. There are many companies that are operating cut-rate affordable web page hosting services, but you might end up in big trouble if you go with them. Because of the anonymous nature of the internet, they could be located anywhere in the world and not necessarily subject to the same laws that we are used to. Unscrupulous companies have been known to take a client’s money, shut down their website, and hijack their domain name once it has enough value to make it worth their while. If you are going to make your business online, then you have to deal with a company that is truly legitimate.

If you have a small company or are an affiliate marketer who has few requirements from your hosting provider, then you probably have no need for dedicated hosting solutions.
If you have just a few domain names, you don’t need them either. If, however, you are doing some pretty fancy stuff behind the scenes of your website, or are hosting multiple domains and email systems, then you should be looking for a dedicated host instead of a shared or virtual host.
Dedicated hosting solutions are almost the equivalent of having your own server, except that it is hosted off-site. In many cases, this is better for you, since if something happened to your company, your files would still be safe at another location. But, if you are hosting your sites on someone else’s server, you are responsible for making sure that you have a back-up system in place.

Back in the day, when domain names cost upwards of $50 each and it took days or even weeks for the domain name to be assigned to you, it was even more difficult to find domain hosting solutions. There were a few companies out there who individuals could work with, but they were expensive and not particularly user-friendly. Now, it seems that companies that handle domain names are a dime a dozen – they even advertise during the Super Bowl! But, how do you, an affiliate marketer, determine what kind of company to host your website and domain is right for what you are trying to do?
1. Make sure that the company is reliable and has been in business for a long time, usually five years or more. They should have an office in your country that is open 24 hours a day.
2. You will also want to make sure that they aren’t relying on you to back-up your own site. Make sure that they have a off-site back-up system in place in case their offices are damaged or cut off from the world, as what happened during a recent hurricane.
3. As an affiliate marketer, you will probably want a lot of domain names. Try and find a company that will allow you to purchase the names in bulk and manage them easily. You don’t want to have a different account or web space for each domain name.
In addition to working with a company that has an adequate backup situation already in place, you need a company that will be able to help you with problems 24 hours a day, and preferably from their base in the United States. Some larger companies farm out their customer service to faraway places where people with thick accents attempt to figure out your problem. If you want ease of service and immediate resolution, you might want to look elsewhere for your domain hosting solutions.

Many companies, once they start to grow, move too fast into finding a dedicated web hosting solution. They realize the benefits of such a change, but they rarely are aware of what a responsibility running your own server can become. If something goes wrong, the server crashes, or your data is lost, you are essentially fully responsible. There is no back-up other that what you have organized. There is no one to blame but yourself.
If you have had your domain names attached to a shared server space, you are used to being able to call someone up when the server goes down, your domain names are not propagating fast enough, or your email is disappearing. If you choose a dedicated web hosting solution, there will be no one to call. Of course, if there is a mechanical problem with your server, then the hosting company will help you on their end, but it is your responsibility to maintain the server, re-boot it, and make repairs as needed.

When it comes to choosing website hosting solutions, most of us already think we know what we need. We need a reliable, customer-friendly company that will host our sites and deliver our leads, email, and clicks to us. But, if you stop to think about it, you actually need more than a company acting as your connection to the Internet. The server is just the beginning of what most companies actually have to offer you.
Yes, you need server space, and you probably want a lot of it. You also want a lot of bandwidth so that you can service a lot of customers at the same time, and so your pages load quickly. But, don’t you want to be able to set up a database? If your website hosting solutions company is not MySQL or PHP-friendly, then your choices are very limited as to what you can implement on your website.

Your web host is your link to the outside world and if they are unreliable, fussy, or non-communicative, you and your business will be in big trouble. When you start to compare web host packages, it is these issues that really should come to the forefront.
Before you start worrying about bandwidth and web design templates, make sure that the companies you are looking at will treat you well.
There are numerous surveys out that show which web hosts are the more customer-friendly and that is a great place to start. Before you look at price and before you look at the free tools you will be given, make sure they can answer your emails or phone calls 24 hours a day. There are still some web hosts that work on a 9-to-5, Monday to Friday work week – so beware!

For people who are shopping for web hosting for the first time, the entire process seems like a complete mystery. If you try to compare hosting and you don’t know what you are doing, all you will see is a lot of lingo and probably just end up going with the company that is the cheapest. But, cheaper is definitely not always better in the hosting world and you may find that by spending only a few dollars more a month, it will make the difference between your business succeeding and failing.
Although on the surface, it may seem that if you compare hosting, all the differences you will find are bandwidth and disk quote, but your hosting is much more than just uploading files. The first and foremost part of your hosting package will be the acquisition and hosting of your domain names. You need a host that will register your domains at a good price and also guarantee appropriate privacy if you request it. Some hosts will let you pay for privacy protection, only for you to find out later that the whole world can see what domains you own.

I recently made the mistake of listening to a friend when I was thinking about moving hosts for a few of my domains. He said that his host was reliable, accommodating, and inexpensive. What he didn’t tell me was that they weren’t going to let me do all that I needed to do when I moved my files there. They had great web templates and super statistics packages, but they wouldn’t let me run my database. So, after moving my files and waiting for my domain names to propagate, I had to do it all over again.
Don’t make the mistake I did! Compare hosts before you switch over. On the surface, the host my friend told me about was great. They had several web template packages that came with the hosting package I bought. They allowed me host multiple domains in one low-priced account. But, when it came time to install my database, they had certain restrictions that meant I could not properly install it.
